Winged Assassin

THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS; WE KNOW THAT YOU CAN HEAR US, EARTHMEN. YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR UNPROVOKED ATTACK ON OUR COMPLEX ON MARS. WE WILL BE AVENGED. WE WILL ASSASSINATE THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED ASIAN REPUBLIC.

The life of the Asian Director-General has been threatened and Spectrum are providing the security. An early assassination attempt is foiled by Captain Grey.

Following the aftermath of 'The Mysterons', Captain Scarlet is still being tested by Dr. Fawn, who reveals that Scarlet has retained a Mysteron ability that has been dubbed 'retrometabolism', which makes him virtually indestructible. Scarlet is allowed back on duty, and is to accompany Captain Blue to London International Airport in preparation for the Director-General's flight back home.

We see a plane, the DT-19 New York to London International crash into the sea following engine and radio trouble, and is Mysteronised.

Captain Grey accompanies a decoy Director-General to the airport, whilst the real McCoy travels in the back of an 'Octane' tanker. London is sealed off for the occasion.

At the airport, as the DT-19 comes in to land, Captain Scarlet suddenly feels unwell, but the reaction goes unrecognised, as it is the first time that it has happened. The Director-General boards his plane and to taxis towards the runway in preparation for takeoff.

The ground crew radio in to inform the control tower that the DT-19 is refusing to open its doors. Using binoculars, they can see that the craft is empty! It moves away, and the Spectrum officers pursue it. Destiny leads the Angels in an aerial attack that is unsuccessful. Captains Scarlet and Blue attempt to shoot the tyres, but the firing mechanism in the SPV is jammed. Captain Scarlet takes the decision to ram the nose wheel and ejects Captain Blue from the SPV before attempting his suicidal mission.

Scarlet is successful in stopping the DT-19, but the Director-General's plane hits it during take-off and crashes back to the ground. The Mysterons have succeeded in carrying out their threat, and Captain Scarlet has been killed. However, as Captain Blue says, he may yet return...

If we hadn't already worked it out, this is the biggest hint that Captain Scarlet is to be much darker than Gerry Anderson's previous shows. The good guys don't always win.
